Modern man, therefore, now approaches the last act of his tragedy, and I could not, even if I would, conceal its finality or its horror.

We have lived to witness the joining, in intimate partnership, of the automaton and the id. The set of uncoordinated instinctual trends rising from the lower depths of the unconscious, and the automaton, the machine-like thinker and the manlike machine, wholly detached from other life-maintaining functions and human reactions, descending from the heights of conscious thought.
